Following in the footsteps of its Porsche and Ferrari rivals, Lamborghini today announced the “Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo”, a one-make racing series that will kick off in May 2009 featuring a lightweight version of the Gallardo LP 560-4. For the record, Blancpain is a Swiss luxury watchmaker that will sponsor the race-series. The Italian firm intends to build a total of 30 cars that will be available for both individual drivers as well as Lamborghini dealer teams. However, one factory car will be reserved for celebrity ‘guest drivers’.
The Super Trofeo race car that will compete in the series is based on the Gallardo LP560-4 with power being provided by a lightly juiced up version of the standard model’s 5.2-litre V10 engine generating an extra 10HP for a total of 570HP which is channeled to all four wheels Lambo’s e.gear six-speed sequential gear box.
Weighing in at 1,300 kg or 2,870 lbs, the Super Trofeo Gallardo also features a reworked suspension, Pirelli slick tires, a specialist racing brake system and the necessary safety cage. The cockpit includes ultra-light racing seat, racing steering wheel and specialized instruments. According to Lamborghini, the Super Trofeo Gallardo and parts package is priced at €200,000 plus tax and entry fee.
The first competition of the 2009 provisional calendar will run on 3 May, 2009 at Silverstone Circuit in the UK, followed by Adria in Italy on 17 May; Nuremburg’s Norisring in Germany on 5 July; Spa in Belgium on 2 August; Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya in Spain on 20 September; and will end on 4 October in Monza, Italy.
